un-Archive and mis-Behave

This is an on-going, research un-archive of earthly rats and mice.
If you want to add any rats or little critters you want to care for, individual or breed/strains, with or without a name, please write here. It aims to make many lives(and non-lives) around us visible and recognize their labors, as well as unlearn the value-making.

︎background video:  the game agents(rats) trained by maching learning are constantly failing(escaping) from the training zone.

zucker rat

The Zucker rat was bred to be a genetic model for research on obesity and hypertension. They are named after Lois M. Zucker and Theodore F. Zucker, pioneer researchers in the study of the genetics of obesity. There are two types of Zucker rat: a lean Zucker rat, denoted as the dominant trait and the characteristically obese (or fatty) Zucker rat, which is actually a recessive trait of the leptin receptor, capable of weighing up to 1 kilogram (2.2 lb)—more than twice the average weight.
Obese Zucker rats have high levels of lipids and cholesterol in their bloodstream, are resistant to insulin without being hyperglycemic, and gain weight from an increase in both the size and number of fat cells. Obesity in Zucker rats is primarily linked to their hyperphagic nature and excessive hunger; however, food intake does not fully explain the hyperlipidemia or overall body composition.

They live around Kottbusser Tor, Berlin, Germany.

In the Japanese Experiment Module “Kibo” of the International Space Station (ISS), researchers used the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) to rear mice for 35 days under an artificial gravity environment (1G) in orbit and under a microgravity environment (0G). All mice returned to Earth alive and breed successfully. Credits: JAXA/University of Tsukuba/Osaka UniversityMouse in microgravity environment (0G) Mouse in artificial gravity environment (1G)
This is a laboratory rat with a brain implant, that was used to record in vivo neuronal activity during a particular task (discrimination of different vibrations). On this picture scientist feeds the rat apple juice through a pipette.
Rats inside rat-baiting
Rat-baiting is a blood sport that involves placing captured rats in a sunken pit or other enclosed area surrounded by spectators and then betting on how long a dog, usually a terrier, takes to kill them by taking rats in its mouth and shaking them to death. Often, two dogs competed, with the winner receiving a cash prize. It is now illegal in most countries.
Wistar Han IGS Rat
Rederived by GlaxoWellcome from Han Wistar stock supplied by BRL. Transferred to Charles River UK in 1996. Transferred to Charles River in 1997 and rederived into isolator maintained Foundation Colony. IGS refers to animals bred using the Charles River International Genetic Standardization (IGS) Program.
Coat Color White (albino)
Strain Code 273
Ideal For general multipurpose model, safety and efficacy testing, aging, oncology, surgical model
Phenotypes & Mutant Alleles model mice
The image shown here is of a two littermate mice where the right is homozygous for the spontaneous "obese" allele of leptin ( Lepob /Lepob).
Leptin is a hormone which regulates body fat as well as the sensation of hunger, and mice with homozygous loss-of-function alleles are hyperphagic, obese, and susceptible to diabetes and other complications.

DBA/2J mouse
Stock No: 000671 | DBA2
Also Known As:D2J, D2, DBA2, DBA, DBA/2
DBA/2J is a widely used inbred strain. Some characteristics include low susceptibility to developing atherosclerotic aortic lesions, high-frequency hearing loss, susceptibility to audiogenic seizures, development of progressive eye abnormalities that closely mimic human hereditary glaucoma, and extreme intolerance to alcohol and morphine.
B6.Cg-Tg(K18-ACE2)2Prlmn/JStock No: 034860 | K18-hACE2
Also Known As:K18-hACE2
K18-hACE2 transgenic mice express human ACE2, the receptor used by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) to gain cellular entry. The human keratin 18 promoter directs expression to epithelia, including airway epithelia where infections typically begin. Because K18-hACE2 are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV viruses, they are useful for studying antiviral therapies to COVID-19 and SARS.
These mice should be handled in a manner consistent with CDC/ABSA/WHO guidelines for prevention of human infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Proper PPE and handling methods should be used at all times when working with these mice. Additional important guidelines for using SARS-CoV-2 susceptible mouse lines.

Long–Evans rat
The Long–Evans rat is an outbred rat developed by Drs. Long and Evans in 1915 by crossing several Wistar females with a wild gray male. Long-Evans rats are white with a black hood, or occasionally white with a brown hood. They are utilized as a multipurpose model organism, frequently in behavioral and obesity research.

Another rat from Kottbusser Tor, Berlin, Germany. It was very curious about wildlife camera.
